MUA Q™ — an EQ assessment that's relevant to the workplace
What's the point of testing EQ?
EQ is linked to better work outcomes. But you can't just wave a magic wand to become more emotionally intelligent! It starts with understanding how strong your current skills are. That’s why we developed MUA Q in collaboration with Dr. Ali McCarthy, a MUA coach and certified EQ expert. The test helps you and your team evaluate your skills, then set specific goals that'll directly affect your performance.
Teams with higher EQ are:
MUA Q™
Measured skills
We designed MUA Q to measure these four skills, which are markers of success in the workplace.
Self-awareness
How well you understand and recognize your own emotional patterns and reactions and how these may influence thinking and decisions at work.
Communication
How well you express yourself in the workplace, especially sharing thoughts and feelings with colleagues.
Interpersonal effectiveness
Your ability to start and grow strong, healthy relationships at work.
Growth mindset
How much you believe in your ability to learn, develop, and succeed.
Validity & Reliability Testing
MUA Q: Workplace-relevant EQ testing
MUA is thrilled to launch this test. It’s new, which means we’re counting on people like you to help us test and improve the reliability of this survey instrument. That's why we’ll invite you to retest one or two more times. Your participation will significantly help refine and validate this tool. And it’ll give you valuable insights to help you strengthen your EQ skills.
What should I do after I receive my test results?
Great question. Think of MUA Q as a springboard for change. The best action to take after the test results are in, therefore, is to encourage your team members to think about their results, then make plans to implement changes. At MUA, we can help you do that through coaching, software, and our many other offerings. But if you want to start on your own, we recommend that your team (or you!) follow these basic guidelines:

What is the purpose of MUA Q?
MUA Q is an assessment that evaluates emotional intelligence (EQ) skills relevant to the workplace. It focuses on evaluating self-awareness, communication abilities, interpersonal effectiveness, and growth mindset.
MUA Q's purpose is to give individuals and teams insights into their strengths and opportunities for developing stronger EQ, so they can have more positive working relationships and outcomes.
What does MUA Q measure?
MUA Q measures competencies related to perceiving, understanding, and managing emotions in yourself and others. These competencies include self-awareness, self-expression, interpersonal skills, empathy, relationship-building, and commitment to personal growth.
How does MUA Q evaluate self-awareness?
The self-awareness section includes questions about recognizing your emotional patterns and reactions and how these may influence your thoughts and decisions at work. These questions encourage teams and professionals to reflect on how emotions can affect their professional conduct.
How does MUA Q evaluate communication abilities?
The communication section explores your comfort levels with self-expression in the workplace, especially regarding how you share thoughts and feelings with colleagues. It also examines your perceptions around how open communication can shape your working relationships and collaboration.
How does MUA Q evaluate interpersonal skills?
Questions related to interpersonal skills assess capacities like empathy, your support toward colleagues, and how you consider different perspectives. These questions highlight the importance of listening, understanding others, and making connections in building workplace relationships.

How can my team continue developing emotional intelligence?
Taking MUA Q is a starting point. But you can go further to enhance your emotional intelligence—and there's always room to improve. After your team members take the assessment, consider having them set goals related to improving specific competencies, mentoring others, or expanding capabilities that MUA Q doesn't measure. Also consider MUA's ongoing learning resources—like Performance Q, or our daily-use performance software—which improve critical areas of professional and team development.
What happens after I test?
We’ll email you your results, and after that, we’ll invite you to retest one or two more times. This is a new test, which means we’re counting on people like you to help us improve its reliability. We encourage you to retest because you'll be helping us refine and validate this tool significantly by doing so. Retesting will also give you valuable insights to help you strengthen your EQ skills.
